A recent San Francisco case is a sobering reminder that ride verification still matters.

According to the San Francisco District Attorney, a jury convicted Orlando Vilchez Lazo on 11 felony counts in a case where prosecutors said he posed as a rideshare driver and targeted women leaving bars and nightclubs. Local coverage says the convictions included kidnapping and rape-related counts.

Posting this here as awareness, not fear bait.

Most rides end safely, but this is exactly why people should slow down and verify before getting in:

  • match the plate
  • match the car
  • match the driver
  • stay in visible pickup areas
  • do not rush just because someone says your name

For drivers and passengers alike, small verification habits matter most when people are tired, distracted, or leaving late-night spots.

What safety habit do you think people skip too often at pickup?
